Ear-marking Mission

Sami Reindeer Herder Ear-Marking Break

Each summer the Sami reindeer herders of Northern Scandinavia face the challenge of ear-marking each of the new calves born to their herd. Using the ancient mark of their family, the small carvings made in the ears allow the herders to recognise their herd whilst they graze. It’s a daunting task given the number of reindeer they are responsible for and the vast distances they cover as they graze across the mountain pastures north of the Arctic Circle. You can join reindeer herder Johan Aslak Logje and his wife in the mountains to help with the task of ear-marking their calves in an unforgettable trip. The working holiday is suitable for families and adventurers looking for a hands-on and genuine insight into how the Sami people live and work with their reindeer.

Available between 10 August - 5 September

DAY 1:

Arrival to Tromso in northern Norway. If this is your first experience of the city, you’ll welcome our recommendations for places to eat and visit. There is very little darkness at this time of the year as the midnight sun is still residence until mid-August. This evening we can recommend an optional evening fjord boat tour for a view of the city and surrounds from the water.

Overnight at Clarion Hotel Edge (or equivalent).

DAY 2:

Today is the start of your adventure - a once in a lifetime opportunity to truly escape off the beaten track to witness and participate in the reindeer herder’s all-important calve-marking season.

Enjoy the journey as you leave Tromso and drive past fjords and mountains travelling further inland by mini-bus to the reindeer pasture land. The journey takes around four hours, and you’ll be welcomed at the camp with lunch before setting up camp and settling in. You’ll help set up the lavvo tent where you will sleep for the next two nights which is a traditional Sami structure.

In the evening, around the blazing fire, dinner will be shared consisting of simple, local ingredients. You’ll sleep in the tent on top of warm reindeer hide.

DAY 3:

A hearty breakfast will get today off to a good start. You’ll observe as the herder calls in his reindeer from afar ushering them into a fenced enclosure where they will be ear-marked. You’ll have little time to stand around as there will be plenty to do to assist the herder with his tasks. All the calves will firstly be marked with a number on their neck, before having time to wander the enclosure in search of their mothers. Hot coffee and a snack will be served before resuming the ear-marking task. You’ll be shown how to mark the calves following the herder’s own unique pattern. It is a painless process for the reindeer and a great way to help out. At the end of an exciting day, a hot dinner is served by Ellen Inga, the herder’s wife. The dish is a traditional Sami dish known as bidos consisting of a vegetable broth and delicious reindeer meat. Your final night will be inside the lavvo. You’ll sleep well after a hard day’s work.

DAY 4:

After breakfast, it is time to bid farewell to your hosts and return to Tromso bringing with you memories to last a lifetime.Your final night will be in Tromso.

DAY 5:

Transfer to the airport for your return journey home.
